Avalanche Speeds Past Panthers

The Florida Panthers stayed with the Colorado Avalanche for 52 minutes. Then speedy Valeri Kamensky went into high gear.
Kamensky scored twice in the final eight minutes and the Avalanche defeated Florida, 4-2, on Monday night at Miami, extending their unbeaten streak to a franchise-record 12 games.
St. Louis 6, New York Islanders 4--Pierre Turgeon and Joe Murphy each scored twice as the Blues handed the Islanders their 10th loss in 13 games at New York. Turgeon’s first goal snapped a 2-2 tie at 3:57 of the third period.
Vancouver 6, San Jose 1--Markus Naslund snapped a 13-game goal-less drought with a pair of power-play tallies as the Canucks routed the Sharks at Vancouver. Kirk McLean made 26 saves and Pavel Bure also scored on the power play for Vancouver.
Buffalo 2, Chicago 1--Dominik Hasek stopped 43 shots and shut out the Blackhawks over the final two periods to lead the Sabres at Buffalo. The Sabres improved to 6-0-1 at home over their last seven games.
Washington 3, Boston 2--Kelly Miller scored two goals and goaltender Jim Carey stopped 31 shots, leading the Capitals at Boston.
Hartford 3, Toronto 1--Sean Burke stopped 44 shots and the Whalers snapped a five-game losing streak by defeating the Maple Leafs at Hartford. Keith Primeau and Kevin Dineen scored in the second period.
Montreal 4, Detroit 1--Mark Recchi scored twice and Jocelyn Thibault made 35 saves to lead the Canadiens to the victory at Montreal. Recchi scored 21 seconds into the third to tie the game, 1-1.
NHL Notes
Mighty Duck goalie Guy Hebert missed practice because of fever and other flu-like symptoms Monday, two days after his strong performance in the NHL All-Star game. Coach Ron Wilson expects him to be able to return today. . . . Craig Berube of the Washington Capitals was suspended for two games and fined $1,000 for a slashing incident in a game last week against the Ottawa Senators.
