Sax Man: Don Menza, above, is known for tearing up the keypads with lightning-fast tenor sax solos. . . . But Menza says quiet ballads are a truer reflection of his personality. “You can tell a lot about a person’s soul and who they are by the first four bars of a ballad,” says Menza (F1B), who plays Friday in Burbank.
Real Diva: Soprano Carol Vaness is an opera diva of the first order. In demand for leading lady roles around the globe, she seldom has time for concerts. . . . But at an Alex Theatre recital tonight, she’ll sing art songs. “It’s kind of like doing a million little operas,” says Vaness, who studied voice at CSUN in the 1970s (F1A).
Reward Money: The LAPD needs help in solving the random killing of Peter J. Maloney, which frightened Toluca Lake. And the City Council on Wednesday OKd $25,000 for a reward fund. . . . The L. A. Citizens Crime Commission’s Jack Arian offered the first $2,500. Arian, Councilman John Ferraro and others will announce the award at 10 a.m. today at the Bank of Hollywood, Toluca Lake.
