Gilmour Assists in Leafs’ Win

From Associated Press

Wendel Clark scored in his first game back after sitting out 16 games because of a broken thumb, but then again, it wasn’t that difficult.

Doug Gilmour made sure of that.

Actually, he made sure that none of the Maple Leaf goals were all that difficult, assisting on all of them in a 5-3 victory over Calgary that ended a seven-game Toronto losing streak.

Clark’s goal at 11:58 of the second period was the game-winner at Toronto, and the Maple Leafs won for the first time in 1997. The goal came 28 seconds after one by Rob Zettler ended a 2-2 tie.

Clark also assisted on a power-play goal by Kirk Muller in the first period.

“[The thumb] held up pretty well,” Clark said. “It was a bit sore, but that’s to be expected.

“Dougie had an outstanding game, led everyone the whole way, and Cat [Felix Potvin] made a great save to end the game.”

Potvin preserved a 4-3 lead with a spectacular close-in glove save on a shot by Theoren Fleury--who had already scored twice--with 20 seconds to play.
