Bid to Close Alley at Apartments Denied

The Sturbridge Village Apartment complex this week lost its bid to close off an alley and erect gates, a move that residents said would increase security and keep vagrants out.
Residents of the apartments had complained to the City Council that car burglaries are common and said that gates would deter would-be criminals from entering the 196-unit complex on Yorba Linda Boulevard.
“We just want to be able to enjoy our homes without outsiders being able to come in,” said Judith White, Sturbridge assistant manager.
But other residents of the area near the apartments said the alley is heavily traveled and that closing it would cause traffic congestion.
The council Tuesday denied the request on a 3-2 vote.
Mayor Chris Norby, speaking for the majority, said the city does not give up public property when it is not essential to do so and pointed out that many people use the alley.
