A confrontation Thursday involving three men in a Newport Beach home ended with one shot to death, one hospitalized with major stab wounds and the third being questioned by detectives, police said.

Jonathan Edward Pavese, 26, was found stabbed about 10:15 a.m. in his home in the 200 block of 21st Street after two men fled the home, according to Newport Beach Police Sgt. John Desmond. He was listed in guarded condition Thursday night at UCI Medical Center in Orange.

One of the men who fled, Ryan Calvin Kerr, 25, also of Newport Beach, was found about 100 yards away from the home with gunshot wounds, Desmond said. Kerr died an hour later at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, police said.

The third man turned himself in at the police station about 5:45 p.m., cutting short a citywide search for him, Desmond said. His name was not released, but he was described by witnesses as in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet tall, 180 pounds, with brown hair in a small ponytail. He also has “lots of tattoos,” Desmond said.

A .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun and a knife were recovered at Pavese’s home, police said.

“It’s been real difficult to sort out the sequence of who did what to whom and why,” Desmond said. “Our detectives are working on that now, and we hope to get some answers on what relationship, if any, exists between these people.”
