FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A helicopter on a herbicide-spraying job to the Everglades clipped the top of a 300-foot radio tower and crashed Thursday, killing all four aboard.
The helicopter, operated by Air Center Helicopters based in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, was under contract to the South Florida Water Management District.
On spray jobs, the passengers are dropped off to spray herbicides on melaleucas, an Australian tree that has displaced native Everglades vegetation.
