NEW YORK — Members of the Gambino, Luchese and DeCalvacante organized crime families were arrested in a massive raid early Thursday in an unprecedented undercover operation based at an FBI-run social club.
Federal authorities said that 34 people were arrested in the dawn sweep after indictments were unsealed. A total of 47 defendants, including members and associates of the crime families, were charged with crimes that include racketeering, extortion, trafficking in stolen property, gambling and drug and gun dealing.
The case marks the first time the FBI has run an undercover operation from a “social club.” The effort has resulted in the recovery of more than $5 million worth of stolen property.
An undercover FBI agent and a cooperating witness ran a stolen-property fencing operation from the Brooklyn club. They also ran a warehouse that regularly served as the “drop” for the storage and sale of truckloads of merchandise that had been stolen from locations throughout the East Coast, authorities said.
