Harris Misses All-Star Shot

Laker representation at All-Star weekend Feb. 8-9 in Cleveland--already loaded with Kobe Bryant, Travis Knight, undoubtedly Shaquille O’Neal, possibly Eddie Jones, Gary Vitti as the Western Conference trainer and assistant coach Larry Drew for the rookie game--almost also included Del Harris.
Only in recent days was Harris eliminated in the running for coach of the West, a recognition that will instead go to his longtime friend, Houston’s Rudy Tomjanovich. George Karl of Seattle could not be considered because of a rule against repeat appearances on the sideline, a rule that went into effect because Pat Riley was such a regular while with the Lakers.
“I’d like to have the best record in the conference, that’s what it means,” Harris said. “It’s like any honor with a coach in the All-Star game, getting the ring or coach of the year. It means your team did well.”
