The Southern California College women’s basketball team leads the NAIA in team scoring defense, giving up only 48.9 points per game.
The Vanguards are the only NAIA team holding opponents to fewer than 50 points. Simon Fraser is second at 52.4 points.
“We spend a lot of time on defense,” SCC Coach Russ Davis said. “We feel that defense wins games.”
Tuesday, however, the Vanguards could have used a little more offense. SCC didn’t score a point in the final 6 minutes 57 seconds of the first half against Fresno Pacific, turning a 24-23 Fresno lead into a 36-23 halftime advantage.
Fresno Pacific (10-7, 1-1 in the Golden State Athletic Conference) won, 67-54. SCC (13-4, 2-1) remains in a first-place tie with Concordia (13-5, 2-1) and Point Loma Nazarene (6-10, 2-1).

More women’s basketball: Concordia struggled in an 80-69 loss to Azusa Pacific Saturday, but rebounded with a 94-78 victory over Point Loma Tuesday. The Eagles, fourth in the NAIA in scoring offense at 86.6 points, lead the nation in scoring margin--winning by an average of 25 points.
“We’re still searching for consistency,” Coach Dave Wolter said.

Men’s basketball: Chapman will try to stop a three-game losing streak and turn around a six-out-of-seven losing trend at UC San Diego tonight. The Panthers, who started the season 9-1, are 10-7 and haven’t played at home since Dec. 17, a stretch of seven games.
San Diego (11-6) is led by All-American candidate Matt Aune, a center who is fourth in NCAA Division III in scoring (25.8 points) and seventh in rebounding (12.2). “I don’t think there’s anyone in Division III who can guard him one on one,” Chapman Coach Mike Bokosky said.
