Television Workshop Puts Students Behind the Camera

Most schools are taking today’s technology into the classroom, but Manhattan Beach Intermediate is taking technology one step further with a television workshop that gives students hands-on experience.
MBI-TV is the only television program offered in the city’s schools and gives students the opportunity to get behind the camera, deliver the news with the help of a TelePrompTer and produce and direct their own shows, which are broadcast weekly at the school.
Students participating in the television program produce two shows a week. The five-minute “AM MBI,” broadcast live on Friday mornings, features a student anchor who reads the daily bulletin. Students who celebrated a birthday during the week are wished happy birthday and and a lineup of what’s to come on the television show “Inside MBI” is announced.
On “Inside MBI,” student anchors narrate three segments on student issues and concerns. The 15-minute prerecorded show is aired just before lunch on Fridays and includes a weekly message from the hearing impaired.
