Transfer of Lab Site Advances

The transfer of the former 33-acre Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory site to the Port of Hueneme has moved a step closer.
William J. Cassidy, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy, met with local dignitaries Friday at the Seabee base to mark last week’s signing of what is called a Record of Decision, which approves the environmental work that was conducted before the land could be conveyed.
The actual land transfer will not be completed for several more weeks.
The tiny port will use the land to expand its acreage by nearly 50% and increase its cargo-handling capacity. The city will use a portion of the site for a trail leading to a planned museum in an existing lighthouse.
The NCEL land was identified for closure in 1993 as part of the Base Realignment and Closure Act. The civilian and military personnel that previously occupied the site were transferred to a state-of-the-art building on the Seabee base.
