Bumpy Go: It was a wet week, and much of the state (A17) remains braced today for more rain. . . . In the Valley, storm-delayed projects include repairs at Maclay Middle School. In Northridge, paving machines returned Friday to streets scraped rough for resurfacing. Officials hope for completion by Feb. 7 . . . provided it doesn’t rain.

Winners and Losers: When the MTA delayed a vote on a cross-Valley subway until after the April election, someone called it “a fig leaf” for Mayor Richard Riordan. Yes, say Tom Hayden supporters, and “Valley voters will see right through it.” Hayden says it’s a win for him. He’ll focus on Riordan’s subway flip-flops.

Mounting Up: News that the LAPD mounted unit, above, is short of four-legged recruits triggered “some great response,” a police official said. About 100 owners have offered to donate their steeds. . . . Officers are checking backgrounds and suitability.

The Week Ahead: Former state Assemblywoman Paula Boland won’t let her appointment Friday to a state board stop her from running for a city charter reform commission. She is poised to hire a campaign manager and start fund-raising. The state job--evaluating addicts for release from mandatory treatment programs--requires only six days a month. . . . That leaves plenty of time for other duties.
