Mapping Our State’s Oddities
More than 500 sites are on the “Eccentric California” map, published by Frank Ness, a former Navy surveyor and nautical chart producer from Monterey. Despite its name, the map lists many traditional attractions such as the Hollywood sign, but it also has genuine oddities such as the Banana Museum in Altadena. A caveat: Ness says he gleaned the listings from published sources but did not always check them out. We found a wrong phone number, for instance. So check before making a trip. To order, send $6 to the California Eccentric, P.O. Box 8744, Monterey, CA 93943.
