Workers at Ohio GM Truck Plant Strike

Times Staff and Wire Reports

General Motors Corp. union workers at a truck plant in Moraine, Ohio, went on strike after rejecting a tentative local contract with the auto maker. The 4,300 members of the International Union of Electronics Workers assemble Chevrolet Blazer, Oldsmobile Bravada and GMC Jimmy compact sport-utility vehicles at the plant. They had threatened to walk off the job earlier in the month, before reaching the tentative settlement. The workers voted down the proposed contract, citing concern about attendance requirements, a GM spokesman said. The plant wasn’t scheduled to operate Sunday, although it was to resume production this morning. It wasn’t immediately clear if the company and union will negotiate today to resolve the strike, said Gerry Holmes, a spokesman for Detroit-based GM.
