Knicks Give Riley Extra Time Off

From Associated Press

Pat Riley won’t be working at the NBA All-Star game because his team couldn’t come up with the one victory that would have earned him the Eastern Conference coaching job.

The New York Knicks came up with their 14th consecutive home victory and avenged their worst home loss of the season Sunday by beating the Miami Heat, 95-89, in a matchup of the top two teams in the Atlantic Division.

League rules prohibit Phil Jackson of Chicago from coaching the All-Stars two years in a row, so the spot goes to the coach with the next-best record through Sunday’s games.

A victory by Miami would have done it for Riley, but instead the job goes to Doug Collins of the Detroit Pistons. Detroit is 30-11, Miami is 30-12 and New York is 30-13.

Patrick Ewing scored 24 points for the Knicks, who haven’t lost at home since Dec. 3 when the Heat defeated them by 24.

Milwaukee 94, San Antonio 76--Glenn Robinson scored 19 points and had 12 rebounds for the Bucks, who held the Spurs to 10 fourth-quarter points, at Milwaukee.

Elliott Perry gave the Bucks a 13-point lead with a layup that made it 84-71 with 4:15 left. The Spurs never got closer than 13 thereafter.
