The view from the Green Bay Packer locker room:
FROM WIDE RECEIVER ANTONIO FREEMAN
Q: How were you able to break loose for an 81-yard touchdown?
A: “I was licking my chops when I saw the safety walk up to cover me. I knew all I had to do was make him go the wrong way, and he went for the fake. The rest was just running and running, and let me tell you, I ran like I’ve never run before.”
FROM QUARTERBACK BRETT FAVRE
Q: Did you talk to anyone special before the game?
A: “I talked to my dad earlier in the day, and he knew I’d been through a bunch this year but I had played well. And he goes, ‘You can make it all right by winning this ball game.’ ”
FROM RECEIVER DON BEEBE
Q: How does it feel to win a Super Bowl after losing four?
A: “Winning one erases the feelings I had after losing four, and now that I have held the Lombardi Trophy in my hands, I can tell you it’s a little heavier than I thought, and I’m not sure I’m going to let it go.”
FROM GENERAL MANAGER RON WOLF
Q: Why did you take a risk on Desmond Howard?
A: “He’s as good at what he does as anyone I have ever seen in this league.”
FROM COACH MIKE HOLMGREN
Q: What does it mean to the Packers’ organization to be Super Bowl champions?
A: “This trophy was named after Vince Lombardi. As important as it is to every player in the league, it’s more important to us. This is where it belongs.”
FROM KICK RETURNER DESMOND HOWARD
Q: Why were you able to break the 99-yard kickoff return?
A: “We talked about it at halftime, but didn’t get the coverage we were looking for on the first kickoff of the third quarter. But on the second one, we felt we really could break a big one; I just ran up the middle and followed Don Beebe’s block. After that, I pretty much knew it was a touchdown.”
FROM DEFENSIVE END REGGIE WHITE
Q: Do your three sacks pack more meaning into this win?
A: “Now I can sit back with my son years from now and watch the highlights of the Super Bowl, and he can see his daddy getting three sacks.”
FROM WIDE RECEIVER ANDRE RISON
Q: How did you get so open for the 54-yard touchdown on the Packers’ second offensive play?
A: “It was an audible. Brett Favre came up to the line and saw the safeties coming down and he changed the play.”
