A Los Angeles police sergeant pleaded not guilty Monday to four charges of felony sexual battery involving young San Fernando Valley women he stopped for curfew violations.
Sgt. David Louis Navarro, 41, who worked at the Foothill Division police station in Pacoima for nine months, is being held at the Los Angeles County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is being represented by a public defender.
Los Angeles Municipal Judge Michael Kellogg set a preliminary hearing for Feb. 7.
Police said the patrol sergeant, who has worked for the LAPD for 15 years, allegedly fondled young women in Sylmar and Chatsworth from June to November last year. Prosecutors say Navarro abused his power as a police officer by patting down young women stopped for curfew violations.
LAPD policy calls for women to be frisked by female officers, except in life-threatening situations.
The sergeant, who worked at the Rampart Division police station before coming to the Valley, is being held in a separate area of the jail, secluded from the general population, said Sandi Gibbons, a spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.
