Salvation Army officials estimate that its volunteers helped 6,700 needy Orange County families during the holidays.
Programs targeted families rather than individuals this winter, said Lee Lescano, the county’s Salvation Army coordinator. Recipients were given meals, shelter and toys during the holidays.
“Need exists year-round, but at Christmastime there is a special urgency to make sure the less fortunate are not forgotten,” Lescano said.
Noteworthy volunteer groups for this holiday season included Greenville Fundamental School in Santa Ana, which gathered 2,500 cans of food; the Orange County Sheriff Assn. and PacifiCare Health Systems of Cypress, for providing 1,500 gifts for needy children; and the Target and Mervyn’s stores for providing 4,000 gifts, officials said.
Still, Lescano said, the Salvation Army needs post-holiday help, including shelters in Fullerton and Santa Ana, and various services countywide.
