Associated Press

Former All-Star game most valuable players Karl Malone of Utah, Latrell Sprewell of Golden State and Mitch Richmond of Sacramento were among the players added as West team reserves for the game Feb. 9 in Cleveland.

Malone was an All-Star MVP in 1989 and in 1993 when he shared the honor with Jazz teammate John Stockton. Richmond won the award in 1995.

Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning of Miami were among the East reserves.

Fans would pay $2 extra per game and Sacramento would give the Kings a $70-million loan to keep the team in the city, under a draft proposal presented to the City Council.

City fiscal experts said the plan protected public funds--the prime concern of local politicians--but questions were raised about “whether this is the right thing for the city to do,” said Councilwoman Heather Fargo.

The council was expected to take a preliminary vote late Tuesday on the proposal, the product of intense negotiations between King owner Jim Thomas and city officials.

A final vote was scheduled next week.

The Houston Rockets will lose star forward Charles Barkley for at least seven games after he re-injured his right ankle and star guard Clyde Drexler for two games because of a hamstring injury.

Barkley will undergo a second MRI exam today on his ankle, which has caused him to miss four games before Saturday.

Charlotte Hornet forward Anthony Mason will sit out two games because of a sprained toe on his right foot. Meanwhile, center Eric Leckner returned for his second stint with Charlotte, signing a 10-day contract. . . . Philadelphia 76er forward Derrick Coleman returned to the team after his unexcused absence over the weekend and was activated off the injured list. The club said it penalized Coleman, although it didn’t reveal the extent. Meanwhile, rookie guard Allen Iverson was hospitalized for a short time Tuesday because of a minor stomach virus. He is expected to play tonight against Toronto.
