General Magic Plans More Layoffs

General Magic Inc., still struggling to show a profit, said it is cutting its work force for the second time in three months. The Sunnyvale-based software company said it plans to eliminate 49 jobs, reducing its staff to 138. It fired about 80 employees on Halloween. Shares, which were unchanged at $1.17 in Nasdaq trading, have skidded from a 52-week high of $10.25 on Feb. 1. In October, the firm reported its 11th straight quarterly loss. Its third-quarter loss widened to $12.4 million, or 48 cents a share, from $5.1 million, or 20 cents, in the year-earlier quarter. Revenue dropped 77%, to $754,000 from $3.23 million, after the company changed its strategy and began selling Internet-based versions of its software.
