Transient Finds Body of Infant in Trash Can

Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials are asking for the public’s help in identifying the body of an infant found Monday in a trash can along Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu by a transient rummaging for food.
The newborn baby, a white or Latino boy about two weeks old, was discovered inside a trash receptacle near Topanga Canyon Boulevard dressed in a tan T-shirt, white sleeper, a diaper and one blue sock.
A pink blanket and a piece of white cloth were found next to the infant. Homicide detectives said they believe the baby had originally been sealed inside a cardboard box that was found underneath the body. The box had been stuffed in a plastic bag and dumped in the trash can.
Coroner’s officials have not determined what caused the death of the infant, now known as Baby Doe No. 15. Sheriff’s officials have not classified the case as a homicide.
Detectives said witnesses saw a couple standing near the trash can early Monday evening driving a late 1980s or early 1990s Camaro that is possibly green. A similar car was seen by another witness heading north on the 101 Freeway just after 5 p.m.
Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the homicide bureau at (213) 890-5500 or the coroner’s office at (213) 343-0714.
