Four juveniles were arrested on suspicion of releasing an irritant, possibly pepper spray, that forced evacuation of a Long Beach middle school Wednesday, authorities said.
More than 1,000 students and staff were evacuated from Franklin Middle School, and a 52-year-old science instructor was transported to a nearby hospital after complaining of allergy-related breathing problems, Long Beach Fire Capt. James Watson said. The instructor was treated and released.
Police said three 12-year-olds and a 13-year-old were charged with assault with caustic chemicals. Officer Maria Mendez said the youths were believed to have set off canisters of pepper spray in a math class, as well as outdoors near a physical education building.
