TBS to Change Its ‘Super’ Status
Time Warner Inc.’s TBS Superstation said it will convert to a basic cable network Dec. 31, a move expected to boost cash flow by as much as $100 million in the next five years.
The switch from being a local superstation will allow TBS, the most-watched channel on cable, to start charging cable operators for the right to carry the network. TBS was one of the original superstations, or local stations whose programming is distributed nationally on cable.
The change won’t greatly affect its Atlanta Braves baseball programming. TBS will televise 90 games a year, down from about 125 now. The firm said that reduction will free up space for the network to televise Warner Bros. movies.
