Library on Drawing Board for 47 Years to Open

A library branch that has been on the drawing board for 47 years in Harbor City is scheduled to open Thursday.
Los Angeles is opening its 67th branch library in the Victory Center Mall at 1555 Sepulveda Blvd. It will have 25,000 books and other materials and will be connected to the Los Angeles Public Library’s computer network. Norma Anders has been named the branch manager.
In 1950, the people in the neighborhood north of San Pedro were expecting money in the Los Angeles city budget for a new library branch but the funds never materialized. For decades, residents have had to travel to either the Torrance or Carson city libraries.
The library is being funded with the help of a $750,000 community development block grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
