Event Makes a Dent in Cost to Restore Theater

The Balboa Theater Foundation has made another small step toward reaching its goal of raising $1.3 million to renovate Balboa Theater.

On Wednesday, more than 300 people climbed aboard the Catalina Flyer for a dinner cruise through the harbor that netted $12,000 for the restoration of the 1927 movie house.

“We were really thrilled with the turnout,” said board member Dayna Petit. “It’s another little step in the direction we are going.”

Since the theater closed in 1992, a citizens’ group has been raising money to refurbish the cinema as a venue for art films and live performance.

The theater’s reopening also is considered crucial to the city’s Balboa Peninsula revitalization plans.

The next fund-raising event, originally scheduled for Sept. 14, has been changed to Oct. 12.
