AGUA DULCE — A pilot was seriously injured Thursday night when his experimental helicopter went down in a rural area south of the Antelope Valley Freeway.
George K. Mitteer, 52, was flying the aircraft, believed to be home-built, when it crashed on the roadway in the 30900 block of Agua Dulce Canyon Road about 7:35 p.m., said Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg McHenry.
The injured pilot was taken by air ambulance to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was in guarded condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
It wasn’t known what caused the helicopter to crash. Officials of the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to visit the site this morning, McHenry said. Agua Dulce Canyon Road is expected to be closed during this morning’s investigation.
