Largemouth bass biting sporadically on plastic worms and crankbaits. Marlin Spencer, Santa Barbara, 7-9 bass, on homemade lure. Trout slow, but some being caught at dam.

LAKE CASITAS--Catfish best bet. Jenny Silvestri, Ojai, 15-pound catfish, on mackerel at Station Canyon. Michelle Elshere, Ojai, 12 1/2-pound catfish, on night crawler in same area. Trout fair at 35-50 feet, biting on Apex and Needlefish lures near dam. Several limits. Largemouth bass slow.

CORONA LAKE--Top catfish, a 5-6. Lots of really little catfish, but fishing is anything but great. Hybrid striped bass boiling in mornings and evenings.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Top catfish, a 29-2 by Nick Carson, Westminster, on mackerel at Kids’ Lake. A few others heavier than 10 pounds, and lots of smaller catfish, and a few largemouth bass being caught and released.

IRVINE LAKE--A 58-pound blue catfish was caught by Wayne Wimer, Paramount, on mackerel at Santiago Flats. A 40-pounder also was boated, as well as dozens of smaller catfish. Other species slow.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass averaging 3-5 pounds biting mainly on anchovies and chicken livers at south end and along north shore. Catfish biting on same baits. Largemouth bass fairly active along south shore, biting mostly on night crawlers and purple plastics.

LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass active at Rock Climbers’ Cove, with jerk baits and spinnerbaits working best in mornings. Bluegill bite good at Bernasconi Beach and north end on crickets. Some trout being caught off dam. Catfish bite fair at night.

BIG BEAR LAKE--Limits of trout obtainable but by no means the rule. Several fish in the 5-pound class have been caught, with Power Bait and Rapalas getting most.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Only four catfish were caught at lower Otay, but one of those was almost 86 pounds and probably will become a line-class world record. San Vicente is still yielding enormous amounts of crappie (7,358 from July 21-27), while El Capitan, Hodges and Sutherland remain home to hungry largemouth bass, with Sutherland producing an 11-4.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout and crappie continue bite sporadically, though there is nothing of any size coming out of the lake. A few limits of pan-size trout have been logged.

BISHOP--Weir Pond along Bishop Creek producing limits for fly-fishermen using woolly buggers and hare’s ears. South Lake best bet for boaters and bank fishermen, with trout in the 3-pound range being caught on everything from Power Bait to Kastmasters.

MAMMOTH LAKES--Rock Creek Lake, Crowley Lake and Convict Lake all producing quality catches and many limits. Fly-fishermen doing best at Crowley, using Doc’s Twin Lakes Specials to catch 18- to 20-inch rainbows. Chris Arakawa, 7, Hacienda Heights, caught an Alpers trout with a tag worth $100 at Convict Lake. Rock Creek is fair for stream fishermen using salmon eggs and small spinners.

JUNE LAKE--All four lakes on the loop producing occasional limits of mostly pan-size trout, with an occasional fish biting on a surface lure..

BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Lake best bet for quality fish, with trout from 1 1/2 to 5 pounds biting for trollers using flasher-night crawlers combinations and boaters drifting or anchoring and fishing with Power Bait and night crawlers. East Walker has slowed some, but it’s still doing great for fly fishermen using damsel flies and stone-fly nymphs. There is a good dry-fly bite in early mornings. Virginia Lakes great for float-tubers and bank fishermen, who are catching limits of mostly pan-size trout.
