Police Chief Named to State Training Panel

Gov. Pete Wilson this week appointed Irvine Police Chief Charles S. Brobeck to the state Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Members of the unpaid commission meet quarterly to develop and implement statewide training standards for police and civilian employees.

The 15-member panel includes prosecutors, labor representatives and members of the public. Huntington Beach Police Chief Ron Lowenberg also is a member.

The appointment is pending state Senate confirmation.

Brobeck, 57, has served for nine years on an advisory board to the commission.

He has spent much of his career working with new recruits--who must go through a 22-week, post-academy mentor program with experienced officers.

“I think I have a lot in my background--training expertise and professional experience. I can share in making decisions for the state,” he said. “I am familiar with all of the training we do in this state . . . for all levels of law enforcement, including civilian personnel.”

Brobeck has served as Irvine’s chief since 1991. He previously was police chief in Novato and San Rafael.

He also is a board member of the Exchange Club of Irvine and for Drug Use Is Life Abuse.
