City Will Review Proposed Changes to Sign Ordinance

The City Council will review proposed changes to the city’s sign ordinance at its meeting Monday.

The council has been reviewing the sign code since May, paying particular attention to size and location issues, as well as possible limits on political signs.

Council members examined a draft of the new ordinance May 19 and sent the proposal back to the Planning Commission to clarify which streets would be off-limits to the largest signs allowed in the ordinance.

Under a proposal passed by the Planning Commission June 10, signs up to 25 feet high would be allowed on large lots on Beach Boulevard, Brookhurst and Golden West streets, and Adams, Edinger and Warner avenues.

The upper limit would be 20 feet for all other streets in the city, on lots with at least 400 feet of street frontage.

But some council members have balked at giving permission for bigger signs in the city.

“We’re moving in the wrong direction,” Councilman Tom Harman said at a recent council meeting. “I believe it is promoting signs that will uglify our city.”
