Group to Seek More Internships for Youths

A neighborhood group will hold a town hall meeting Tuesday to ask school officials to promote more paid internships for Santa Ana students.
Corey Timpson, director of the Orange County Congregation Community Organization, said Santa Ana students often cannot afford to take unpaid internships. Or they may be unaware of how to seek out paid internships, he said.
“They need a foot in the door,” he said.
Santa Ana Unified School District is in a good position to bridge the gap between students and businesses, Timpson said. He emphasized the need for more paid internships in the private sector but said similar programs in the public sector also are important.
Timpson said paid internships can help boost student achievement. “Once kids get out there and see the business world,” he said, “they’re more motivated.”
The neighborhood group has invited school board members Aida Espinoza and Rosemarie Avila to attend Tuesday’s 7 p.m. meeting at St. Anne’s Church, 1344 S. Main St.
