One of Colony’s Leaders Arrested

Police in the capital, Santiago, arrested one of the leaders of a mysterious German colony when he returned from Argentina with four other settlers. A Chilean judge had issued arrest warrants for Hartmut Hopp and his wife, Dorothea Witthahn, after they failed to attend a court hearing Thursday on charges that they illegally adopted their teenage son Michael. The couple had flown to Argentina accompanied by their son and the daughter of the enclave’s fugitive founder, Paul Schaefer, who has been accused of sexually molesting boys at Colonia Dignidad.
