Gore Scores Hat Trick with Victory

Jason Gore of Valencia became the first golfer since 1973 to win the California Amateur, California Open and Pacific Coast Amateur in the same year with a seven-stroke victory in the Pacific Coast Amateur Friday at Makena Golf Club’s South Course in Maui.

Gore finished with a seven-under-par 281, seven shots better than Chia-Yuh Hong of Taiwan and Steve Sheehan of Northern Nevada.

Gore combined with Craig Steinberg of Van Nuys and Mark Johnson of Helendale to give Southern California Golf Assn. a 12-stroke victory over Taiwan in the team standings.

” She’s just overcome so much that she’s somebody the kids can really look up to. She’s an incredible person,” said Lindsay Amstutz, a coach and program coordinator in the Mason Park Girls’ Basketball League.

Wideman, 21, was born prematurely and struggled with early health problems before finding her niche on the basketball court.

Perry out: Cal State Northridge wide receiver Cameron Perry, whose availability for next season had been doubtful, is academically ineligible, Coach Jim Fenwick said Friday.

Perry, a 5-9 senior, was Northridge’s second-leading receiver last season with 57 catches for 710 yards and nine touchdowns. He was an All-Big Sky Conference second-team selection.

Also academically ineligible, Fenwick said, are offensive tackles James Romero, a 6-6, 340-pound senior, and Will Ford, a 6-4, 315-pound transfer from Rancho Santiago College.

Fenwick said that freshman quarterback Jeff Dover, from Highland High in Bakersfield, will play at Bakersfield College.
