Mighty Ducks Sign Sandstrom

They still don’t have a coach signed, sealed and delivered, but the Mighty Ducks bolstered their roster Friday by signing free-agent right wing Tomas Sandstrom to a two-year contract.

“Tomas Sandstrom brings us veteran experience and scoring ability,” General Manager Jack Ferreira said in a prepared statement. “We are excited to have him join the Mighty Ducks.”

Ferreira was traveling Friday and unavailable for further comment. Contract figures for Sandstrom’s new deal were not immediately available. He made $1.4 million last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings.

Sandstrom, 32, helped Detroit win its first Stanley Cup in 42 years after he was traded Jan. 27 from Pittsburgh for Greg Johnson.

Sandstrom had 18 goals and 42 points in 74 games. He was in his native Sweden on Friday and also unavailable.

This was the second significant move for the Ducks in as many days. On Thursday, they re-signed defenseman J.J. Daigneault to a three-year contract worth less than $1 million per season.

Still unsigned are all-stars Paul Kariya and Guy Hebert and Dmitri Mironov, Daigneault’s defense partner on the power play. The Ducks also hope to re-sign several role players, including defenseman David Karpa and centers Ted Drury, J.F. Jomphe and Sean Pronger.

The Ducks hope to have Pierre Page hired by the start of training camp next month. But Ferreira is still playing hardball with the Calgary Flames, refusing to meet their demands for compensation for hiring their former coach.

By signing Sandstrom, who has played for the Kings and New York Rangers, the Ducks have added more depth and experience. Sandstrom has 81 points in 135 playoff games.

He is expected to fill the vacancy created on the second line when free agent Jari Kurri signed last month with the Colorado Avalanche.
