Fernandez Decides to Call It a Career

Pitcher Sid Fernandez, whose greatest success came during the 1980s with the New York Mets, announced his retirement Friday after 14 years in the major leagues.

Fernandez, 34, called it quits after a comeback this year with the Houston Astros fizzled because of an arthritic condition in his left elbow. He had suffered a variety of injuries since 1991 when he missed four months after breaking a bone in his left wrist in spring training.

Andres Galarraga of the Colorado Rockies had his three-game suspension upheld by National League President Leonard Coleman. Galarraga will not play Sunday in Pittsburgh, and Monday and Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Galarraga charged the mound after he was hit on the elbow by a pitch by Dennis Cook of the Florida Marlins on May 31.

The San Francisco Giants made three roster moves to make room for three pitchers obtained in Thursday’s trade with the Chicago White Sox.

To make room for Wilson Alvarez, Roberto Hernandez and Danny Darwin, the Giants optioned pitcher Joe Roa to triple-A Phoenix, designated pitcher John Johnstone for assignment and asked waivers on catcher Rick Wilkins.

The Arizona Diamondbacks signed Alvaro Serrato, 17, a right-handed pitcher from Hermosillo, Mexico, and announced he will join the Diamondbacks’ farm team in the Dominican Summer League.
