School Use of Hubbard Texts

Re “L. Ron Elementary--a Parody With a Point,” July 29.
In today’s society I find it strange that Scott Harris was allowed to write such a slanted article, aptly called a parody, about his fantasy of what it would be like to apply L. Ron Hubbard’s study technology in public schools. Very cute, Scott. Would you have done the same if it were a study technique used in a Catholic or Jewish school?
You’re obviously prejudiced against Scientology and know nothing about the study techniques proposed. What’s wrong with using a nonsectarian study technique which has been proven to improve students’ IQ, data assimilation and application, something we all want?
Get real, and show more concern about improving the way our kids are learning.

I admire your position as editor of this influential paper. At the same time I recommend that you look at the L. Ron Hubbard, Secular, Applied Scholastics Study Materials for yourself--in order to maintain your personal integrity--while reporting on these materials to millions of people in this very large community.
I can tell you that the Applied Scholastics Materials and program are secular and that my son has studied several of the books in the program. Before he started this program he felt stupid and self-critical. After each book he became brighter and more confident in himself. Now he loves to study. He stops when he comes to a word he doesn’t know and he looks it up in a dictionary. He no longer complains that he hates math. Now he loves it. This has made an incredible difference for my son.

I’d like to let you know that I am able, if I wish, to pick up any book on any subject and study the contents and be able to apply it confidently. This wasn’t always so.
It was only after I learned the study technology that was conceived and developed by L. Ron Hubbard that I became able to do so. I consider this one of the most precious abilities I possess. In fact anyone can easily acquire this talent--at any age, in any language and of any religious persuasion. I’d really like to see the charter school, which uses these methods, become a reality.

Re: “Hubbard Texts Used by Some Teachers,” July 27.
Isn’t it just so convenient for the Church of Scientology to prove themselves as a bona fide religion to the IRS so they don’t have to pay taxes? But now they have “nonsectarian learning techniques appropriate for students of any faith” that they want to sneak into the public school system.
If Scientology works for you, then that is a thing of beauty. But it has no place in the public educational system. Also the teachers who are involved in the teaching of this should be fired immediately without further discussion.
This is something I would fight till my last breath to try to stop.
