Hit-Squad Veterans Granted Amnesty

Eight years after lifting the lid on state-ordered assassinations, a white former police hit-squad leader was granted amnesty from prosecution for the murder of an anti-apartheid lawyer. Dirk Coetzee and two black accomplices, David Tshikalanga and Almond Nofomela, were granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for the fatal stabbing of lawyer Griffiths Mxenge in November 1981. A lawyer for Mxenge’s family, which opposed the application from the start, said on state radio that he will challenge the decision in the high court.
