Enron Corp.’s Enron Renewable Energy unit has won preliminary clearance for a $9.1-billion project to generate power from a Himalayan river in Nepal, the company said. If it goes through, the Karnali River project will be one of the largest hydroelectric projects in the world and make power-deficient Nepal a big exporter of electricity. . . . Talbots Inc. said it will initiate a $13-million marketing campaign later this year, the biggest in its 50-year history, as the women’s clothing retailer tries to stem a decline in same-store sales. . . . Funds controlled by billionaire investor George Soros and affiliates raised their joint stake in shares of Uniondale, N.Y.-based Hain Food Group Inc. to 16.96% from 15.42% of the company’s outstanding stock. Phoenix-based hotel real estate investment trust Starwood Lodging Trust said it agreed to buy three Westin Regina resort hotels in Mexico from Bancomer, a Mexican commercial bank, for $133 million to expand outside the U.S. . . . The Antigua and Barbuda government issued a fraud alert after the collapse of European Union Bank and the disappearance of its co-founders. The locally chartered bank, which fired all its employees Thursday, had marketed itself as the first offshore bank on the Internet.
