BURBANK — A federal grand jury has indicted a 43-year-old Los Angeles woman on charges that she embezzled more than $8,500 from the Burbank-based Office and Professional Employees International Union, Local 174.
Linda Contreras, former secretary-treasurer of the entertainment workers union, was charged with using the president’s signature stamp to sign more than 10 checks from union accounts to herself between January 1993 and March 1996, according to the indictment.
She was charged with 10 counts of embezzlement and one count of false entry on records, and faces a maximum sentence of 51 years in prison and a $110,000 fine, prosecutors said.
Contreras’ employment with the union ceased in April 1996.
Union President Christine Page declined to comment on the case saying, “It’s been a very long and difficult time for the local.”
The union represents 1,800 office workers in major studios and other companies in the entertainment industry.
