HUNTINGTON BEACH — A 19-year-old body surfer was presumed dead Tuesday after he was enveloped in a wave and never resurfaced, police said.
Mark Lane White of Long Beach was with a friend at the City Beach north of the Huntington Beach Pier about 3 p.m. when both found themselves tangled in the surf, Sgt. Larry Miller said.
“The friend watched [White] go under but was unable to help,” Miller said.
A nearby surfer helped the friend to shore and alerted lifeguards, who joined police and rescue teams in a three-hour search for the victim.
