Pianist Herbie Hancock, who is performing Saturday at the Long Beach Jazz Festival
Cruising: What I really like to do is take my Ferrari out for a ride up the coast. It’s a great feeling, and I do it solo, because my wife really isn’t a Ferrari fan. She’s only happy when we’re out in the Mercedes, so tooling along the ocean by myself is a very special treat.
Eating Out: It’s one of the things we try to find time for. Spago has been kind of our regular destination. But I also like Indochine. My wife and I both love Thai food, and the cuisine is really delicious there. Our other favorite is Valentino’s in Santa Monica. It’s expensive, but the food is great.
Home Theater: One of our favorite things to do is to kick back with a friend like Wayne Shorter and watch movies at home. I don’t think we actually go out to a movie more than once every year or so. But I have a home theater with THX sound and all that, and I belong to the motion picture academy, and they send me movies and screeners. Plus I’ve got a great collection of films on laser disc.
Party Time: I like to go to parties, but not to as many as you might think, because I’m just not around long enough to do so. But I’m an outgoing person, and I like socializing with other people.
Best Memory: One of the best weekends I ever had was when we flew to Baja with about 17 of our friends. We rented a boat and went out to some island to go snorkeling--just Wayne, Billy Dee Williams, my next-door neighbor and a bunch of really close friends. That was a great way to spend a weekend.
