Stormy weather could delay today’s 10:41 a.m. EDT launch of the space shuttle Discovery. Shuttle weather forecasters said there is a 60% chance of acceptable conditions. Discovery is loaded with 24 payloads, including an atmospheric-research satellite to be released and later retrieved, and a 5-foot robotic arm to be tested for the first time in space. The crew includes 5 U.S. astronauts and 1 Canadian who will become the first Icelandic-born person in space.
