Universal Studios to Launch TV Channels
Universal Studios Inc. said it plans to introduce new cable and broadcast television channels worldwide as part of the company’s efforts to boost its TV business globally.
The company named former MTV executive Tony Garland as managing director of Universal Studios Networks, which will oversee channel development. Garland, who will be based in London, was executive vice president of MTVN International. He also has worked at Home Box Office.
No details were provided beyond the company’s plan to launch “branded television channels” worldwide.
The studio also did not disclose how much money it plans to spend. Universal lags other major entertainment rivals, such as Walt Disney Co. and Fox, in television distribution.
“We plan to create and launch, or invest in cable/direct-to-home and broadcast program services in key markets,” said Blair Westlake, president of Universal’s pay television and television business development unit.
