Property owners have approved a $709,000 assessment to allows the city to continue to maintain its parks.
“This is a tremendous victory for the people of Baldwin Park, said City Manager Carl Yeats.
The balloting was required under Proposition 218, which calls for property owners to approve the continuance of special tax assessments for services such as public landscaping and park maintenance. The Baldwin Park City Council had annually approved the assessment until this year.
After officials tallied the votes, weighted by the value of a property owner’s tax assessment, land owners with a combined assessment of $72,018 supported the parks measure, while those with a combined assessment of $54,942 opposed it. Only 27% of the 14,000 ballots the city distributed in June to property owners were returned.
City officials had held half-a-dozen town hall meetings on the need for the levy and council members lobbied major landowners.
