City OKs Budget of $48 Million

On the heels of last year’s $4-million shortfall in the city’s budget, the City Council this week approved a $48.3-million balanced-spending plan.
Among the major expenditures are $22.7 million for police services and $10.6 million in fire services. Staffing levels in the city are the lowest in 10 years, according to city officials.
Last year, the city was forced to eliminate 65 staff positions and consolidate some departments to meet the shortfall.
Mayor Bruce Broadwater said that the city’s belt tightening paid off but that revenue into the city needs to continue to grow.
