School District Picks New Assistant Chief

The Santa Paula Elementary School District this week tapped Jeff Davies, principal of Ventura’s Portola Middle School, to fill the post of assistant superintendent of educational services.

Bonnie Bruington vacated the position after the school board last year bumped her up to superintendent of the 3,510-student school district.

Her promotion followed board members’ decision to oust then-Supt. Dave Philips, who they worried had too much power in setting his own salary.

Davies, who has 21 years with the Ventura Unified School District, seven of those as principal, said in a written statement that he was confident he and Bruington will make a good team.

“Our leadership styles are similar, with an emphasis on communication, collaboration and high expectations for students and staff,” Davies wrote. “I encourage parent participation and community support in schools and hope that I can meet everyone as soon as possible.”

Davies earned a doctorate in education from UCLA. He helped create the district’s proficiency testing program, dropout tracking system and school accountability report cards.
