Saddleback Trustee Recall Effort Fails

An attempt to unseat a recently appointed Saddleback Valley Unified School District trustee has failed, county education officials said Thursday.
Louise Shefflette of Lake Forest initiated the drive last month in an effort to oust Nancy Kirkpatrick and force a special election.
Shefflette needed to collect 1,695 valid signatures by Thursday to move forward with a special election process but turned in only 77 by the deadline, said Judy Bolton, a Department of Education manager.
“We’re not going to verify the signatures we received,” Bolton said. “The case is sealed. . . . No further action will be taken.”
Shefflette, who contended that voters, not trustees, should have selected a new board member, said she expected other residents would turn in signatures.
“I’m not sure what happened,” she said. “I was surprised.”
Trustees selected Kirkpatrick from a field of 12 candidates to fill a vacancy left when longtime Trustee Bobbee Cline resigned in June.
