Blood, Marrow Drive for 7-Year-Old Boy

A blood and marrow donor drive will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shopping center at 9617 Valley View St. to help a 7-year-old boy in his fight with acute lymphatic leukemia.
Steven Guardado was diagnosed with the illness a few days after his 7th birthday. He is beginning a three-month round of intense chemotherapy and will need a safe blood supply, said Mary Muszynski, the event organizer.
Guardado, who has been in remission for five months, may need a bone-marrow transplant in the future, and organizers hope the drive will help locate potential bone marrow donors.
The need for Latino bone marrow donors for cases such as Guardado’s is especially acute because there are few Latino donors. The boy is most likely to find a match among donors of the same ethnic background.
The La Palma and Cypress police departments, along with area merchants, have pledged their support in the effort.
