Switzer Receives Less-Serious Weapon Charge

Times Wire Services

Dallas Cowboy Coach Barry Switzer was charged Thursday with unlawfully carrying a weapon, but not the more serious felony of having a loaded revolver in his carry-on baggage at an airport.

Switzer was arrested Monday for taking the gun into the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in his carry-on bag.

Tarrant County prosecutors charged Switzer with the Class-A misdemeanor for carrying the handgun without a permit. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Carrying a weapon into an airport is a third-degree felony punishable by two to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

On Wednesday, Cowboy owner Jerry Jones fined Switzer $75,000, the largest imposed on an NFL coach.

“We’re not sure exactly how significant it is at this point,” 49er Coach Steve Mariucci said. “The options would be to let it rest and rehab and get him back as quickly as possible or there is a possibility of a scope [arthroscopic surgery].”

Jones will meet with team physician Michael Dillingham today. He sat out five games last season because of a dislocated shoulder.

Running back Warrick Dunn, the 12th overall pick in this year’s NFL draft, limped off the practice field because of a right thigh bruise that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t think is serious.
