When Marion Jones won the women’s 100 meters in a career-best 10.83 seconds in the World Championships of track and field Sunday in Athens, the 1993 graduate of Thousand Oaks High moved into a tie for ninth on the all-time world performer list and into a tie for sixth on the all-time U.S. list.
No dry run: Regina Jacobs ended a long medal drought in the Olympics and World Championships when she placed second in the 1,500 on Tuesday.
Jacobs, a 1981 graduate of what is now Campbell Hall High, had failed to advance to the finals of the 1988 and ’92 Olympics and placed 10th in the ’96 Games in Atlanta. She was also eliminated in a qualifying heat of the 1987 World Championships and pulled out of the ’95 meet with an injury.
Jacobs’ silver medal was also the second-highest finish by an American woman in a distance track event in the World Championships.
Mary Slaney won the 1,500 and 3,000 in the inaugural World Championships in Helsinki in 1983.
