Choi Loses in Quarterfinals at U.S. Women’s Amateur

Eunice Choi of Dove Canyon won her third-round morning match but lost her quarterfinal afternoon match Thursday in the U.S. Women’s Amateur golf championship at Brae Burn Country Club in Newton, Mass.
Choi needed to defeat Heather Graff of Kennewick, Wash., the 1996 Public Links champion, to advance to the semifinals, but Graff won, 2 and 1. Choi defeated Amy Langhals of Kalida, Ohio, 5 and 4, in the third round.

Erica Sorgi of Mission Viejo won the girls’ 14-15 three-meter springboard title at the Speedo National Junior Diving Championships Thursday in Austin, Texas.
Sorgi, 15, also won the one-meter springboard title Wednesday and will compete for the United States in both events at the World Junior Championships this November in Malaysia.
Kimberly Driscoll of Laguna Hills won the girls’ 13-under platform and Robbie Quinn of Laguna Hills won a bronze medal in the boys’ 14-15 one-meter springboard.

Eric Valent, who played at Canyon High School, had three hits and drove in three runs to lead the U.S. national baseball team to a 12-2 victory over France Thursday in the International Cup Tournament in Viladecans, Spain.
The United States is 4-2 in the tournament.

Ryan Moore of Fullerton lost to Rafael de Mesa of Key Biscayne, Fla., 7-6, 6-3, Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 18 Singles division of the U.S. Tennis Assn. boys’ 18-16 tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Cody Jackson of Westminster and David Lingman of Irvine also lost in the 16 Doubles quarterfinals, falling to top-seeded Scott Lipsky of Merrick N.Y. and Jeremy Wurtzman of Rochester N.Y., 6-4, 7-6.
